Apple A Day

In hopes of exposing the connections between food insecurity and health, this illustration combines the “apple a day” idiom that oversimplifies the journey to live a healthy life with an abundance of resources.

While also referencing imagery of Jack and the Beanstalk, a climb to the “peak of health and security” is illustrated as one that is rotten and treacherous, and even when you reach the top - more barriers appears.

Original Idiom Meaning: 19th century proverb advocating for the consumption of apples, and by extension, "if one eats healthy foods, one will remain in good health and will not need to see the doctor often.” Source
