My Process
To demonstrate my process for illustration work, I will walk you through an example project.
THE BRIEF: illustrate the secret of the person in this yearbook photo, without illustrating the person
#1 - Ideation & Mapping
After receiving the brief, I will always start with ideation & mapping. Whatever comes to my mind, I will immediately perform some mind mapping and research (if necessary). Allowing me to synthesize information, carve out important points & layer concepts.
#2 - Thumbnails & Comps
Once I have identified some potential ideas to explore, I will start some thumbnails and comp drawings. They are usually literal chicken scratch, a rough blueprint for my more refined linears. I will also perform extra research if needed.
#3 - Linears, Revise, Repeat
The thumbnails then transition into clean linears - this is the point of my process where I will present a few options. They are usually grayscale unless colour plays a distinct role in the concept. I will then note your feedback and revise them to fit the desired art direction.
#4 - Executing the Final
When a linear is approved for final, I execute it in an analogue, digital or hybrid approach. Often creating some colour &/or media studies for myself to refer to in the process. Once complete, I scan & edit the piece to the noted specifications, and then it’s sent to you!
