Yue Moon

Yue Moon was a vibrant community arts initiative celebrating Lunar New Year in Toronto’s Chinatown through 2019-2022, created in partnership with lead artists Paddy Leung and Winnie Truong, Toronto Chinatown BIA, and STEPS Public Art. Through intergenerational workshops, participants co-created stunning lantern installations that illuminated the neighborhood and its rich cultural heritage. This annual project became renowned for its ability to foster connection, creativity, and a deep appreciation for the stories and traditions that shape the community.

My work included designing materials, creating technical production files and supporting the execution of both in-person and virtual workshops.

Program Development

Developing an accessible and easy-to-understand program is a top priority for every program I facilitate. Due to Yue Moon’s different levels of engagement, we opted for programs that utilized printable templates, digital resources, and art supplies that you can find at home or the local dollar store.

A New Kind of Engagement

Facilitating a tactile tutorial through a screen is a little tricky, but with trial & error, we improved with each year of the program! Whether through COVID or as a low-commitment alternative, the virtual workshops were able to connect with participants from all over to share our collective hopes for the new year.

Assembling & Installation

Yue Moon II was full of firsts and assembling + installation was no exception. Instead of paper lanterns, we designed an original lantern design! Laser-cut in acrylic, each one held 18 lantern artworks and was hung up at local businesses in Chinatown.
